The third night

Thursday evening, 9 July, saw more clashes around Quinney Crescent. Earlier in the afternoon, several hundred youths, both black and white, had gathered at Moss Side Precinct. By 8:00 pm this group had moved on to Quinney Crescent.

Sixty police vans each carrying up to a dozen officers were used to chase and arrest those on the streets, as one witness observed “you got arrested for not running fast enough”. There were clashes between police and crowds on Claremont Road, Quinney Crescent and at the junction of Great Western Street and Princess Road.

A second attempt by a group of youths to stone the Moss Side Police Station was intercepted by police at 9:43 pm. A few minutes later petrol bombs were thrown at police vehicles in Bannerman Square.
