From Arndale to Oldham

On Friday night, 1o July, clashes with police spread from Moss Side, to Salford, Sale, Aston-under-Lyne, Altrincham and Rochdale. A crowd of 150 stoned shops in Oldham town centre. Clashes with the police continued across the weekend in Bolton, Rochdale and Oldham.

On Saturday, police reported violent confrontations with “200 youths of mixed race” at the Arndale Centre in the city centre.

    I think the police response of the Moss Side riots was Sir James Andertons finest hour as Chief Constable of Greater Manchester. The GMP tactic of using snatch squads deployed from vans scattered the rioters and kept injuries to officers to a very level in contrast in the Toxteth riots.
